Julia Steinhardt is an associate in Covington’s dispute resolution group, having joined the firm as a trainee solicitor in 2016.

Ms Steinhardt’s practice includes a range of international contentious matters, including litigation, commercial arbitration, and white collar investigations. In addition, Ms Steinhardt advises multinational clients regarding compliance with anti-corruption standards and the global regulatory landscape on business and human rights.

Investigations

  • Assisted a suspect in a bribery investigation involving the SFO, NCA, and DOJ.
  • Supported a pharmaceutical company’s cooperation with the regulator investigating an international criminal network’s counterfeit product distribution activities.
  • Conducted an internal cultural investigation at a high profile arts organization.
  • Advised a client regarding strategy in connection with a regulatory investigation against a third party in the agricultural sector who had allegedly committed fraud by misusing its products.

Contentious

  • Advised a pharmaceutical company in connection with five customer disputes related to medical products and sales.
  • For an international media company, assisted in a Hong Kong-seated arbitration under HKIAC Rules relating to the most-watched television program in China.
  • Assisted a high net-worth victim of fraud to prepare for disclosure in a complex international dispute.
  • Supported a creative sector organization in its response to an ex-employee’s claim involving issues of privilege, whistleblowing, and discrimination.
  • Advised a life sciences company on enforcing an arbitration award under the rules of the ICC’s international court of arbitration to resolve product distribution issues in Asia. 

Compliance

  • For a pharmaceutical client, drafted a policy to improve internal compliance with anti-corruption standards.
  • For a business network, analyzed anti-corruption practice in the international security sector.
  • Advised a pharmaceutical company regarding competition law. Provided training to executive team on minimizing risks related to competition rules, and advised on pilot projects, internal policy, legal privilege, and regulatory dawn raids.
  • Advised a digital health client regarding risks related to breaches of data protection laws and assisted with emergency response planning.

Business and Human Rights

  • For a global tech client, designed a human rights due diligence process, conducted supply chain review and identified risks in a high value transaction.
  • For a manufacturing sector client, analyzed modern slavery enforcement risks.
  • For a pharmaceutical client, advised on establishing human rights risk audits in the global supply chain.
  • Advised a life sciences client regarding global modern slavery reporting requirements.

Pro Bono

  • Provided emergency legal outreach to Grenfell Tower fire survivors to support the initial disaster response.
  • Advised a non-governmental organization regarding: options for negotiating a multi-national aid-delivery package in an ongoing conflict in East Africa; domestic legal mechanisms for post-conflict governance reforms in the Middle East; and strategy related to international donor agreements in the context of a Middle Eastern conflict.
  • Represented two undocumented children, making successful applications‎ for immigration status or citizenship.
