Lize Louw is a South African qualified attorney in the firm's Project Development and Africa Finance practice groups based in Johannesburg. Ms. Louw has a broad transactional practice focused on infrastructure project development and funding. Ms. Louw represents local and international sponsors, independent power producers, investors and lenders in the acquisition, financing, structuring, restructuring, and divestiture of projects in Southern Africa. She has a depth of experience in the development and financing of projects in the Southern African renewable energy and infrastructure sectors, combined with extensive mergers, acquisitions and corporate law experience in the Southern African energy, infrastructure and financial sectors.

  • Advising an organization within the United Nations on funding made available to local development finance institutions for reinvestment into projects in Southern Africa aimed at mitigating and countering climate change.
  • IJ Global 2018 Africa Biomass Deal of the Year. Advising a listed pulp and paper company headquartered in Johannesburg with global operations on the development and financing of one of the few successful biomass projects in Sub-Saharan Africa with a transaction value of ZAR2 billion.
  • Advising a pan-African supplier of commercial and industrial solar energy installations on the funding for its projects in Southern Africa and Kenya.
  • Advising an international asset manager headquartered in Toronto on the sale of its South African renewable energy power plants and assets with a transaction value of U.S. $200 million.
  • Advising an international financial institution in connection with the restructuring of its investments in a South African company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
  • Advising a Dutch international financial institution in connection with the financing of three scalable small hydro projects in Western Uganda.
  • Advising sponsors and power plant owners on two Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) equity investments in these power plants.
  • IJ Global 2018 Africa Mining & Metals Deal of the Year. Advising the lender on a U.S. $200 million platinum metal purchase transaction with an international mineral resources group, and including the development of an innovative financing arrangement.
  • Advising a sponsor and developer based in Washington, DC on the acquisition, operation and maintenance of renewable energy power plants in South Africa.
  • Advising a South African growth fund on its equity and senior debt investments in a private hospital at Stanger in South Africa.
  • Advising on of Africa’s largest pension funds on its equity and senior debt investments in a private hospital at Mbombela in South Africa.
  • Advising a sponsor and developer based in Washington, DC as local counsel on its listing on the NASDAQ and the inclusion of its South African renewable energy assets in its emerging markets portfolio.
  • Advising China's second largest cement manufacturer and one of the world's top five cement makers at the time in respect of the development and financing of the Mamba cement manufacturing plant near Northam in South Africa.
  • Advising a sponsor and developer based in New York on the funding for the construction, operation and maintenance of the Boshoff 60 MW solar PV plant, the Souptan 30 MW solar PV plant, and the Witkop 30 MW solar PV plant, all in South Africa.
  • Advising a Danish manufacturer, seller, installer and servicer of wind turbines in relation to financial close on six renewable energy projects in South Africa.
  • Advising the South African subsidiary of a multinational commodity trading and mining company headquartered in Switzerland on a piolet project for novel technology for the conversion of furnace “off gasses” to fuel oils.
  • Advising lenders in relation to senior and mezzanine debt facilities for the restructuring of a large South African tourism group.
  • Advising South African commercial banks as lenders to Richards Bay Titanium Proprietary Limited and Richards Bay Mining Proprietary Limited in respect of a ZAR19 billion corporate restructuring of the combined businesses of both entities.
