May 2, 2022
NEW YORK—Michael Reed has rejoined Covington as a partner in the firm’s Corporate and Financial Services Practice Groups, based in the New York office.
Most recently, Michael served as Executive Vice President, Chief Risk Officer, at WSFS Financial Corporation, a publicly-traded financial services company. At WSFS, Michael was a member of the Executive Leadership Team and led the Risk Management Division, which included a team of approximately 160 people. He also oversaw the evaluation, negotiation, and execution of several transactions at WSFS, including the acquisition and integration of Bryn Mawr Bank Corporation, the consummation of a fintech partnership with Upstart, and the raising of $150 million of senior debt.
From 2014 to 2020, Michael was a partner at Covington, resident in the Washington, DC office, working with both the Corporate and Financial Services Groups. Michael represented and advised public and private companies in the financial services, fintech, business services and technology industries on transactional, strategic, regulatory, and corporate finance matters.
“We believe that Michael’s recent executive experience with respect to corporate governance, strategic expansion, enterprise risk management, credit risk management, and regulatory relations coupled with his extensive experience leading major transactions for financial institutions, distinguishes him from practitioners in the financial services space,” said Bruce Bennett, co-chair of the firm’s Financial Services Group. “Clients will welcome the additional insight from this experience, which will help them to develop and implement business strategies to meet the demands of the market and expectations from regulators.”
“I’m excited to rejoin Covington and reengage with potential and existing clients and help guide the development and growth of lawyers at the firm,” said Michael. “I have benefited from an executive perspective of how growing, publicly-traded institutions perceive and execute on a whole host of disclosure, governance, incentive compensation, capital markets, fintech, and M&A matters, and I look forward to helping our clients navigate these issues with this insider’s perspective.”
Michael has a BA degree in history from Wilfrid Laurier University and he obtained his LL.B from University of Western Ontario Law School and LL.M from Boston University School of Law.
