Covington Secures Federal Circuit Victory on Behalf of Texas Instruments

SILICON VALLEY, January 9, 2015 -- Covington achieved a victory yesterday for our client Texas Instruments when the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit affirmed a lower court decision dismissing patent claims brought by Cradle IP against TI.

Cradle IP filed suit in the District of Delaware in 2011, asserting that TI had infringed three patents. Cradle IP accused a wide array of TI’s processors, including its multicore digital signal processors, hoping to collect a significant amount in royalties. Digital signal processors perform mathematical computations on digital data and are used in wide variety of products, such as handheld devices, telecom base stations, ultrasound systems, microwaves, and TVs.

In November 2013, U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson granted summary judgment in favor of TI, finding that the Dallas-based technology company had not infringed the patents. On Thursday, a three-judge panel of the Federal Circuit affirmed that ruling. Covington partner Robert Haslam argued the appeal on behalf of TI.

The California-based Covington team was led by Mr. Haslam and Anupam Sharma and included Hyun Byun, Patrick Flynn, Thomas Garten, and Charlin Lu.
