Covington Announces Seven New Counsel

WASHINGTON, DC, April 17, 2014 — Covington & Burling is pleased to announce the promotion of four lawyers to of counsel and three lawyers to special counsel, effective April 1, 2014.
The new of counsel are as follows:
Lindsay Burke advises U.S., international, and multinational employers on employee management issues and international HR compliance. Her domestic practice includes advice pertaining to discrimination, leave, whistleblower, wage and hour, trade secret, and non-competition issues arising under federal and state laws, while her international practice focuses on drafting global employment policies and coordinating multi-country surveys to ensure that employment contracts and policies comply with local employment laws.
Aaron Cooper focuses his practice on developing and implementing short and long term policy objectives in the fields of intellectual property, antitrust, communications law, and related areas. He previously served as the Chief Counsel for Intellectual Property and Antitrust Law for Chairman Patrick Leahy on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.
Greg Discher focuses his practice on all phases of patent prosecution and counseling, including investigating, obtaining, protecting, and enforcing intellectual property rights for clients that range from international conglomerates to individual inventors on a pro bono basis. Mr. Discher’s counseling practice includes providing strategic advice to U.S. and international companies on procurement, management and enforcement of patent portfolios, and intellectual property issues.
Hope Hamilton advises on litigation in the areas of trademark, false advertising, unfair competition, domain names, copyright, and gray market and counterfeit goods cases. Ms. Hamilton’s practice also includes pre-litigation trademark and copyright enforcement, particularly in connection with Internet and keyword advertising, social media, domain names, and e-commerce.
The new special counsel are as follows:
Matt Franker practices corporate securities law, advising companies on capital markets offerings, securities compliance and regulatory matters, corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate issues. Mr. Franker also has experience advising clients on securities filings, interpretive questions and SEC rulemakings, including under the Dodd-Frank Act and JOBS Act.
Melody Wu practices in the area of intellectual property, specializing in utility and design patents. She regularly advises clients regarding inventorship, patent validity and enforceability, strategic product coverage, licensing and assignment of rights, and changes in the law under the America Invents Act. Ms. Wu manages the worldwide patent portfolios covering several major pharmaceutical products and candidates.
Mark Young focuses his practice on data protection, cyber security and intellectual property. He has particular expertise in regulatory compliance, legislative advocacy and online IP enforcement. Mr. Young advises global companies, particularly in the online/e-commerce, technology and pharmaceutical sectors, on all aspects of data protection and security. In addition to regulatory compliance, Mr. Young advises leading technology companies and consortia on a wide range of law reform efforts in Europe.
