Covington’s Plotkin Named Law360 MVP

WASHINGTON, DC, February 20, 2014 — Law360 named Covington & Burling partner Mark Plotkin as a “most valuable player” in international trade law. Law360’s “MVP of the Year” award recognizes attorneys who had “extraordinary wins and contributed most to their practice area” in the past year.

In a profile on Mr. Plotkin, Law360 recognized him as “one of the country’s go-to attorneys for matters before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States,” and cited his work representing “two major Chinese companies through the often rocky experience of convincing regulators at CFIUS that companies from China can invest in the U.S. without risking national security,” as reasons for selecting him as an MVP. One of the transactions, the $15.1 billion acquisition of Nexen Petroleum by the China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC), was the largest-ever overseas acquisition by a Chinese firm.

Law360 termed Mr. Plotkin a “senior statesman” of the CFIUS bar, noting that he has handled many leading CFIUS cases over time, including the “seminal case” of IBM’s 2005 sale of its PC Division to Lenovo.
