Bruce Deming Named to List of “Top 100 Lawyers” in California

SAN FRANCISCO, September 13, 2012 — Covington & Burling partner Bruce Deming has been named to the Daily Journal’s list of “Top 100 Lawyers” in California. The list recognizes “lawyers who moved the needle, had an impact on the legal industry, our state, the nation and the world,” said the publication’s editors, who considered more than 1,000 attorneys from around the state.
Recognized for his work representing Microsoft on more than a dozen transactions in the past year, Mr. Deming led a team of Covington lawyers on two of the company’s most high-profile deals. He represented Microsoft in its $1.056 billion purchase of approximately 925 AOL Inc. patents and patent applications and the company’s subsequent $550 million agreement with Facebook Inc. that assigned the social networking company the right to purchase a portion of the AOL patent portfolio.
Mr. Deming told the Daily Journal that patents are increasingly viewed by boards and shareholders as capital assets that can be monetized like other capital assets. Along with merger and acquisition skills, he said, “‘You really have to understand IP issues and their implications so you’re structuring the deal in the right way.’”
Mr. Deming has a broad-based corporate and finance transactional and advisory practice, with significant experience handling domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, patent acquisitions, venture capital transactions, project finance and capital markets activities.
The Daily Journal is the largest legal news provider in California.
