BEIJING, 29 June, 2012 — Variety magazine has named Beijing-based Covington & Burling of counsel Jason Goldberg one of “50 Game-Changing Attorneys” in its 2012 Legal Impact Report. The special feature recognizes the world’s top entertainment lawyers whose deals and court battles over the past 18 months have changed the shape of the business.
In a June 25 profile of Mr. Goldberg, Variety cited his recent and forthcoming entertainment work, including production counsel to “Man of Tai Chi,” Keanu Reeves’ directorial debut; advice to a major Hollywood studio on five current projects in China; and counsel on a feature co-production film for another major film studio in the near future. Mr. Goldberg also provides copyright and IP advice to Celestial Pictures, and represents Chinese companies on co-productions and other internationally oriented projects.
At Covington, Mr. Goldberg leads the firm’s entertainment and media practice in China, which advises motion picture studios, independent producers, directors, financial institutions and investment funds, television networks, and sports organizations on their activities in the PRC.
“We strive to achieve technical excellence in an environment where that can be challenging, because our projects typically involve more than one legal system and more than one language,” Mr. Goldberg told Variety. “At its most basic, what we are trying to do as deal lawyers is lay the groundwork for successful cooperation.”
