Covington Named NLADA Beacon of Justice Awardee

December 8, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC, December 8, 2011 — The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) has named Covington & Burling one of its 2011 Beacon of Justice awardees. The association honored 14 law firms nationwide with the award for devoting considerable resources and significantly improving the administration of justice by engaging in pro bono appellate representation.

Covington lawyer Tom Williamson accepted the award on behalf of the firm at the NLADA Exemplar Award Dinner on December 6th at Union Station in Washington, D.C.

“It is an honor to be presented this award from such a distinguished organization dedicated to securing access to justice for those who otherwise would not be able to afford counsel,” said Alan Pemberton, chair of Covington’s public service committee.

Founded in 1911, the NLADA is this country’s oldest and largest non-profit association of individual legal professionals and legal organizations devoted to ensuring the delivery of legal services to the poor.

Covington has had a strong commitment to public service since its founding in 1919. The firm encourages all of its lawyers to participate in pro bono work, and devotes significant resources to finding pro bono projects that reflect the diverse interests of its lawyers. The American Lawyer has ranked Covington at or near the top of its annual pro bono survey for the past 19 years.
