Covington Advises UFC on Fox Deal

August 22, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC, August 22, 2011 — Zuffa LLC, parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and Fox have agreed to a seven-year broadcast deal that will distribute live and taped mixed martial arts programming across the broadcast network's multiple television platforms beginning in January 2012. Covington & Burling LLP advised UFC on the transaction.

The deal is mixed martial arts programming’s largest and most sweeping television deal to date.  It will include the telecast of four live UFC events on Fox’s flagship broadcast network per year, 32 live fights on Fox’s FX cable channel, as well as supplementary taped and live programming on Fox’s other cable channels, including Fuel TV, Fox Deportes and FSMG.  The first live UFC event on Fox airs on November 12 during Saturday primetime, marking the 18th anniversary of the promotion and the sport in the United States.

Founded in 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is the premier organization in MMA.  The Washington-based Covington team was led by corporate partners Doug Gibson and Peter Zern, and included associates Scott Roades, Leah Graham and Darien Capron.
