Covington’s Tielemans Appointed to European Commission’s Data Protection Expert Group

BRUSSELS, November 12, 2008 — Covington & Burling LLP partner Henriette Tielemans has been appointed to the Data Protection expert group (GEX PD) by the European Commission.

The Data Protection expert group will assist the Commission in identifying challenges for the protection of personal data in the EU, and putting forward proposals for addressing those challenges against the background of rapidly changing technology, increased globalisation and the new institutional framework that will be put in place following the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. The group’s five members are appointed by the European Commission for one year renewable terms.

At Covington, Ms. Tielemans is co-chair of the firm's Privacy and Data Security practice group. She advises multinationals on all aspects of data privacy and transfer of data from Europe to the United States, and has assisted several companies to certify under the EU-US Safe Harbor Agreement. She is a regular speaker at privacy conferences in Europe and the US, including the International Bar Association, and addressed a recent workshop of the Department of Commerce and the Article 29 Working Party on the Safe Harbor and other international transfer mechanisms, where she represented the viewpoint of the data controller. Ms. Tielemans has developed particular expertise in privacy compliance programs for multinationals involving detailed data mapping and tailor-made recommendations for compliance.
