"Covington's food and drug regulatory practice has been a core part of our firm's practice from its earliest days," said Stuart Stock, Chairman of Covington's Management Committee. "In recent years, our focus on a broader Life Sciences practice has built on the base of our regulatory expertise. Peter's stature will further enhance our preeminent position as the adviser to most of world's major pharmaceutical companies, emerging biotech companies, and trade associations of industries regulated by the Food and Drug Administration."
Mr. Safir received his J.D. from Yale University and his undergraduate degree from Princeton University. After starting his practice with Breed Abbott & Morgan in New York City, he spent the past 28 years at Kleinfeld Kaplan and Becker, a highly-regarded Washington, D.C.-based regulatory law firm.
"I have tremendous respect for Covington's lawyers and the firm's impressive food and drug regulatory practice," said Mr. Safir. "I especially look forward to working with the firm's Life Sciences Industry Group, which combines lawyers who have extensive experience advising pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies on all legal needs, including corporate and transactional matters, tax, general litigation, product liability and white collar defense, antitrust, legislation and public policy, as well as regulatory matters."
In his new position, Mr. Safir will serve as co-head of the 30-lawyer Food and Drug Practice Group, and as a member of the leadership team of the firm's 100-lawyer Life Sciences Industry Group.
