In celebration of South African women leaders, our Johannesburg office hosted a networking brunch and panel discussion featuring several successful South African professionals in law and public policy. The discussion was moderated by Mosa Mkhize, vice chair of our Africa practice, and included opening remarks by Management Committee member Lisa Peets.

Speaker Profiles:

Mosa Mkhize, Vice Chair of Covington’s Africa Practice, is a Policy Advisor, through which she provides strategic policy and regulatory advice to clients doing business with and across Africa. She has experience in international trade and public policy, supporting senior policymakers and private sector companies on a broad range of issues including policymaking and development, negotiating complex international trade deals, and advocating for regulatory and policy reform across a number of sectors.

Vuyo Mjekula is Director: External Affairs (Policy and Market Access) for Sub-Saharan Africa at MSD South Africa. She is an experienced stakeholder relations, reputation, policy, communications, and transformation executive with demonstrated history of working with multiple stakeholders across a broad range of sectors and geographies. As a seasoned corporate affairs executive, she is passionate about helping organizations understand and navigate the external environment in which they operate to support long-term business sustainability.

Nono Malefane is Senior Director for Government Engagement (Sub-Saharan Africa) at VISA. She is responsible for managing Visa’s government relations in the region comprising 50 countries. Based in Johannesburg, her role includes regulatory affairs and partnerships to enable digital payments, in collaboration with industry stakeholders, including national governments, central banks, international development institutions, and the non-profit sector. She has more than 15 years of experience in government relations, public policy and consulting. Prior to joining Visa, she was at the Absa Group and EY, where she held senior positions in government relations, public affairs, and strategic planning.

Marita Koti is Head of Legal for the investment banking division of Standard Bank. She has 19 years of experience in banking and finance, specialising structuring, advising, and executing capital markets transactions. Her career began at Webber Wentzel, where she practiced before moving to Standard Bank. Marita is an admitted attorney of the High Court of South Africa and holds a B.Com (Accounting and Law), LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Hellen Ndlovu is Director: Corporate Affairs at Naspers. She is a public policy expert with experience in policy and legislation in the public and private sectors. She has policy experience in the industries/subject matters of gambling, liquor, industrial policy, BBBEE, and tobacco, as well as further experience in management of communications, campaign management, membership interface, ATA Carnet, trade, and investment facilitation.
