What advice would you give to someone who wants to be an ally to the API community?
Being an ally to the API community begins with the same empathy that applies to being an ally to any other marginalized community. Support API friends and colleagues by showing that you care. Stay informed about the historical and the ongoing wave of anti-API violence and discrimination, even if it’s painful to do so. Support API organizations and businesses, which have been particularly hard hit during the pandemic. Call out racism, both blatant and inadvertent, in professional and personal settings.
What inspired you to get involved in the API Affinity Group?
Joining Covington’s API Affinity Group felt natural. From learning Chinese and traditional Chinese dances every weekend during my childhood, to dancing with the Asian American Dance Troupe in college, to getting involved with APALSA in law school, I’ve always had a strong connection to the API community.
At Covington, I’ve found it helpful to have this supportive community for both serious discussions and social activities, complementing the friendships developed through my summer class, practice groups, pro bono teams, and office neighbors. Plus, it’s been fun to help plan events for the affinity group (especially when they involve food)!
