Wim van Velzen, a former politician, and a non-lawyer, served for a decade as Member of the European Parliament and as Vice-President of the EPP Group, which is the most important political group at the European Parliament.  Mr. van Velzen was also Vice-President of the EPP Party for 15 years.

Mr. van Velzen has been working in the private sector since 2004.  He plays a key role in Covington's government affairs team, which gathers experienced lawyers as well as former senior policymakers.  Mr. van Velzen advises clients on European public affairs, including the functioning of the European institutions, development of EU legislation and accession of new EU members.  He helps clients to navigate the complex EU policy-making processes and has a long experience in EU advocacy, and strategy and coalition-building.  Since 1989, he has worked extensively in all countries of Central and Eastern Europe and more recently in Southeastern Europe, including the Balkans and Turkey.
