Sean Stein Elected Chairman of the AmCham China Board of Governors

BEIJING—Covington’s Sean Stein, co-chair of the firm’s China Public Policy group, has been elected Chairman of the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce in the People’s Republic of China (AmCham China). The election follows Sean’s completion of two terms as the Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (2022-2024).
As Chairman, Sean is responsible for the policymaking of the organization and the general direction of the Chamber’s activities. He assumed office January 1, 2024.
Sean said, “It is an honor to have been elected by the AmCham China members as Chairman. I have worked with AmChams in the region for more than 20 years and recognize that, now more than ever, open communication between China and U.S. businesses operating in the region is critically important. I look forward to furthering the Board’s mission and helping companies navigate the dynamic U.S.-China relationship.”
A senior advisor in Covington’s Public Policy Practice Group, Sean is a key resource to businesses on issues related to political risk, public affairs, problem solving, and communications. He regularly assists companies in addressing and resolving acute or long-term issues, often through discussions with U.S. and Chinese government officials. Prior to joining Covington, Sean served as the U.S. Consul General in Shanghai. He has over twenty years of diplomatic experience in Asia and has served in leadership positions in China and Washington.
Founded in 1919, AmCham China is a non-profit, non-governmental organization whose membership comprises tens of thousands of individuals from nearly 1,000 companies operating across China. The Chamber’s nationwide mission is to help American companies succeed in China through advocacy, networking, insights, and business support services. It has six offices and more than 30 working groups in China.
