WASHINGTON, DC, August 20, 2010 — Competition Law360 has named Covington & Burling LLP partner Deborah Garza, co-chair of the firm’s global antitrust and consumer law practice, one of the “10 Most Admired Competition Attorneys.” The list was selected by a board comprised of lawyers and the editors of Law360 from hundreds of nominations submitted by lawyers at peer firms.
In a profile of Ms. Garza published August 18, the editors praise her leadership of the Antitrust Modernization Commission (AMC), a bipartisan committee tasked by Congress to review the nation’s antitrust laws. As chair of the AMC, the editors write that Ms. Garza “built consensus among 11 other strong-willed commissioners over three years to produce a 449-page report on antitrust reform.” The profile quotes colleagues who applaud her “calm under pressure” and her “keen understanding of competition law.”
The Law360 profile also touts Ms. Garza’s commitment to public service during several stints at the U.S. Department of Justice including as head of the Antitrust Division, where her accomplishments include leading a successful litigation against the National Association of Realtors. For her work in the private sector, the editors highlight Ms. Garza’s role in some of the biggest mergers to date including the $81 billion ExxonMobil deal in 1999, and more recently, Merck & Co.’s $41 billion merger with Schering-Plough.
