Compliance and Investigations

Recent representative matters include:

• Advising clients in a range of sectors on the design, implementation and evaluation of global compliance programmes, addressing issues such as bribery, money laundering, and modern slavery.
• Advising clients in a range of sectors on corruption and money laundering risks associated with proposed corporate transactions and other activities, including investments by private equity funds.
• Advising clients on the drafting and negotiation of contractual provisions relating to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards, in a range of agreements.
• Advising clients in a range of sectors on suspicious activity reporting obligations and interactions with regulators and law enforcement authorities, including the UK Serious Fraud Office, the UK Financial Conduct Authority, and the World Bank Integrity Vice Presidency.
• Advising clients in a range of sectors on private law rights and remedies available for compliance breaches by agents, fund managers, and other counterparties, including related litigation and arbitration matters.
• Advising clients in a range of sectors on their response to complaints or claims by non-governmental organisations and others relating to business integrity, human rights, and ESG standards.
• Advising clients in a range of sectors on interactions with UK public officials, including transparency obligations under the Ministerial Code, the Civil Service Code, and parliamentary codes of conduct, as well as the requirements applicable to lobbying and other political campaigning activities.
• Conducting internal corporate investigations involving allegations of corruption and money laundering for clients in a range of sectors.

Arbitration and Litigation

In addition to his compliance and investigations practice, Ian has extensive experience in arbitration and litigation matters. He has successfully represented clients in many international proceedings, including commercial and investor-State disputes administered by the London Court of International Arbitration, the International Chamber of Commerce, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration. His experience extends to claims for breach of contract, negligence, infringement of intellectual property rights, and judicial review. He also advises clients on complex governing law and dispute resolution issues, including sovereign immunity issues.
