Paul Tagliabue is senior of counsel and advises clients on strategic matters in the communications and media, technology, and international sectors.

Mr. Tagliabue served with distinction as NFL Commissioner from 1989 until 2006 and presided over an extended period of labor peace and revenue growth in professional football.  During his tenure, the League grew from 28 to 32 teams, secured the largest television contracts in entertainment history, supported the construction of more than 20 NFL team stadiums, and expanded the NFL’s global reach.

Mr. Tagliabue has traveled extensively in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, and has engaged in business, higher education and public policy discussions in Australia, China, India, Japan, and Europe with representatives of business, government and academia on many occasions.

Mr. Tagliabue’s leadership of the NFL has been featured in national and international journals, including in the Economist, (“In A League Of Its Own,” April 29, 2006); Fortune (“10 Top Leaders Tell Their Secrets,” December 12, 2005); Business Week (“The NFL Machine,” January 27, 2003); Time (“The American Money Machine,” December 6, 2004); and in the China Daily ("First and 10 For the NFL in China," May 17, 2005). 

From 1969 to 1989, Mr. Tagliabue practiced law at Covington as a counselor for domestic and international clients and as complex case litigator, primarily in the antitrust arena.  For many years, he was principal outside counsel for the NFL and other professional sports enterprises.  As a Covington partner, Mr. Tagliabue also was deeply involved in firm governance, serving on the Management Committee and in other practice development, pro bono and lawyer mentoring capacities.

In addition to his role at Covington, Mr. Tagliabue continues as a business advisor to the NFL, advises multinational companies in other sectors, and is engaged in higher education matters.

Before joining Covington, Mr. Tagliabue served as a policy analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, specializing on nuclear weapons policies and related crisis management issues.
