We have provided advice to numerous clients on a range of copyright and trademark government affairs matters. Covington lawyers have played a central role in the ongoing activities of a number of trade associations and companies that seek to increase government protection against trademark and copyright violations. For example:
- On behalf of Microsoft Corporation, we have been active in drafting legislation and lobbying to achieve enhanced sanctions and other legislative reforms and in educating consumers and government officials about the problems posed by software counterfeiting and piracy activities. In addition, we drafted legislation and explanatory materials that were included in the fiscal year 2003 treasury and commerce appropriations bills to substantially increase federal funding for targeted law enforcement efforts in this area.
- Our recent representations also include the Business Software Alliance in most of the major domestic and international copyright law reform efforts resulting from the advent of the digital age, including the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the WIPO Treaties, the EU Copyright Directive, the EU Software Directive, implementation of the TRIPS Agreement, and amendments to existing copyright laws in over 30 countries worldwide.
