Covington’s intellectual property work is diverse. We play a leading role in enforcing intellectual property rights against counterfeit and diverted goods, for example, representing an alliance of computer software manufacturers, including Microsoft, in international copyright protection efforts. We litigate patent infringement and patent-related cases for clients such as Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Monsanto, Merck, Pechiney, American National Can, Schering-Plough, and Caliper Technologies. Covington is heavily involved in US intellectual property legislation, advising on GATT and NAFTA negotiations on intellectual property, playing a leading role in litigation addressing GATT-implementing legislation on pharmaceutical patent terms, and implementing and enforcing the TRIPS agreement. We represent clients such as the National Basketball Association, Cartier, and Ringling Bros.-Barnum & Bailey Circus on trademark issues, and we prepare and prosecute patent and trademark applications for companies like Bank of America, Merck, Schering-Plough, and Thomson Reuters, McKinsey & Co., and PBS. Covington counsels large and small enterprises on Internet domain-name matters. We also advise many other clients, such as Montblanc, the National Geographic Society, and Pitney Bowes across a range of intellectual property matters. On a pro bono basis, we serve as special intellectual property counsel to the Smithsonian Institution, advise the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on copyright, publicity, and related issues, serve on the Committee on Intellectual Property of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and conduct Federal Judicial Center patent training courses for federal court judges throughout the country.
