Covington has an extensive trade association and professional organization practice and prides itself on providing cost-effective, practical antitrust advice to its many trade association clients. Our lawyers currently represent more than 130 trade and professional associations, ranging from large national and international associations to small “start-up” organizations. We serve as general counsel or principal outside antitrust counsel to most of our association clients, and our practice spans the full range of legal issues that confront trade associations, including antitrust compliance.
Our lawyers are familiar with the many different antitrust issues that face trade association members and executives. These include advice on the antitrust aspects of association membership restrictions, industry “codes of ethics,” statistical reporting and benchmarking programs, compensation and benefit surveys, group purchasing programs, export activities, joint R&D activities, joint intellectual property enforcement programs, credit reporting programs, legislative and regulatory developments, and antitrust compliance programs.
Two of our partners, George Chester and Bob Long, wrote the chapter on Antitrust Audits in an ABA Antitrust Law Section treatise, Antitrust & Trade Associations. In addition, our antitrust lawyers frequently address meetings sponsored by the ABA Antitrust Law Section, the Conference Board, the Practicing Law Institute and other professional and business groups on issues of interest to trade associations. Firm lawyers also have substantial experience in assisting trade associations to successfully handle all types of government investigations and requests for information.
