Covington’s New York office has experienced dynamic growth since its establishment in 1983, now numbering more than 100 lawyers in one of the most demanding legal and financial markets. Our New York office features two leading practices of almost equal size, corporate and litigation, integrated with the resources of an international firm recognized for its pre-eminent regulatory and industry strengths. With long-standing ties to the corporate and financial communities, our attorneys are known for their creativity and ability to address the most challenging and sensitive transactions and litigation matters. We serve a sophisticated and diverse US and international clientele, focused in industries such as financial services, life sciences, technology, media, energy, and sports, among others.
Our continuing expansion has led to our recent move into The New York Times building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop in association with FXFOWLE Architects. This dramatic architectural addition to the New York skyline is currently tied with the Chrysler Building as the second tallest building in New York and the 6th tallest in the United States, and incorporates environmentally sustainable features such as a dramatic curtain wall skin of clear glass covered with a screen of ceramic rods.
Our corporate practice focuses on mergers and acquisitions, securities and capital markets including royalty monetizations, private equity, venture capital and emerging companies, bankruptcy and corporate restructuring, tax, and intellectual property. Our clients range from large, multinational corporations to venture-backed companies, from senior management teams to boards of directors, from venture and private equity firms to hedge funds, in cutting-edge fields such as life sciences, technology and energy. By integrating our transactional and regulatory expertise, we are able to assist clients in structuring transactions creatively and in solving complex multidisciplinary problems.
During the past 25 years, the New York office of Covington has established close ties to the New York corporate and Wall Street financial communities and to the most important state and federal courts. The office’s broad-based litigation practice, with one of the strongest white collar defense teams in New York, has more than 50 litigators, including five former federal prosecutors. The practice is widely respected for its successful representations of Fortune 250 clients and major financial services clients in securities and corporate control litigation, class actions, commercial litigation, corporate investigations, digital media & entertainment, insurance coverage - policyholders, and executive disputes. The deep experience of our senior lawyers and their knowledge of the New York courts are complemented by our associates, whom we consider essential members of our client teams. Most of our 34 litigation associates clerked before federal courts; more than a dozen clerked either in the Southern District of New York or the Second Circuit.
In conjunction with Covington’s other offices, strategically located in Beijing, Brussels, London, San Diego, San Francisco, Seoul, Shanghai, Silicon Valley, and Washington, we practice as one firm, holding closely to core values that start with a deep commitment to our clients and the quality of our work on their behalf.
