Matthew Krauss is an associate in the firm’s Washington, DC, office and a member of the Litigation Practice Group.  His practice has included both civil and criminal matters, with a focus on insurance coverage disputes.  Mr. Krauss also has experience advising clients in product recalls and related investigations and compliance proceedings involving the consumer product safety laws.  He has represented clients in investigations and administrative proceedings before the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Mr. Krauss also maintains an active pro bono practice and served on a six month full-time assignment at the Neighborhood Legal Services Program, where he represented low-income DC residents at trials and in administrative proceedings involving landlord-tenant disputes, public benefits proceedings, and family law matters.

Representative Matters

  • Representing a railroad seeking insurance coverage for environmental liabilities and remediation at dozens of sites throughout the northeastern United States.
  • Represented an international electronics manufacturer in federal criminal antitrust investigation.
  • Advised on matters involving international corporation’s ability to obtain insurance coverage through litigation in Maine and New Hampshire state courts for underlying lawsuits seeking damages resulting from the marketing and sale of an allegedly defective and dangerous product.
  • Represented former government official in connection with criminal and civil actions and appeals to international human rights organizations involving official’s conduct while in office.
  • Represented manufacturers of automotive components in product recalls required by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • Represented leading manufacturer of consumer electronics in product recall investigation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
  • Represented several leading demand response providers as interveners before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in connection with a regional transmission organization’s proposal to increase its wholesale capacity markets and advocating the equal treatment of demand response providers in those markets.
  • Represented global corporation in responding to the proposed release of confidential information by a federal agency under the Freedom of Information Act.

  • Represented single mother in child custody and visitation dispute in Virginia state court. 
  •  Represented private school in contract and tort dispute with family of former student in Maryland state court.
  • Represented the Legal Community Against Violence as amicus curiae in Woollard v. Sheridan, No. 10-cv-02068-BEL (D. Md.), defending Maryland's permitting system for the public carrying of concealed handguns against a Second Amendment challenge.
  • Represented the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers as amicus curiae in support of a petition for certiorari before the Supreme Court, involving the scope of criminal defendants' constitutional right to unanimous jury verdicts.
