Mike Kingston is a partner in Covington’s London office and a member of the firm’s corporate practice.  He has extensive experience in general corporate and commercial matters.  Much of his practice is international in its scope.  Mr. Kingston has handled a wide range of public takeovers and mergers, private company and business acquisitions and disposals, joint ventures and other business combinations as well as private equity and venture capital work (including institution-led leveraged acquisitions and management buy-outs).  He has also been active in the international equity securities markets with experience in initial and secondary public offerings and stock market listings and equity financings and funding.

With over 30 years experience with leading international law firms and practising out of London, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore, Mr. Kingston has developed particular expertise in the energy and utilities, retail, media and sports and leisure sectors.  He has worked with listed and privately-controlled corporate clients, investment banks, private equity funds and governments and non-governmental organisations, amongst others.  He has been frequently recognised as a leading expert in his field by legal directories in the UK and Continental Europe, including, most recently, Legal 500 UK (2011) and PLC Which Lawyer? (2012).

  • Itochu Corporation’s acquisition of the Paul Smith fashion business.
  • Resolution plc’s acquisition of Abbey National’s UK onshore and offshore life insurance businesses, including the associated £1.54 billion rights issue and re-listing in London and related £2.3 billion acquisition debt financing.
  • London & Regional’s establishment of a joint venture with Istithmar, the real estate investment arm of the Dubai government, to acquire the Victoria & Albert Waterfront development in Cape Town.
  • Federation Internationale de l’Automobile’s grant of the long-term commercial rights attaching to the Formula 1 World Motor Racing Championship to Bernie Ecclestone’s FOA group.
  • Federation Internationale de l’Automobile’s grant of the long-term commercial rights attaching to the World Rally Championship to John Richard’s ISC group.
