Michael Clancy is resident in our Brussels office practicing in the area of EU competition law. Mr. Clancy advises clients on all aspects of competition law, including antitrust and cartel investigations, distribution, R&D collaborations, patent and trademark licensing and other commercial arrangements, the clearance of mergers and joint ventures, and issues related to abuse of dominant position. He has particular experience advising clients in highly regulated industries such as Life Sciences (pharmaceuticals, biotech, and medical devices) and Software & Technology.
Beyond competition law, Mr. Clancy also has significant experience assisting clients on commercial and corporate matters in countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

- Representation of a major pharmaceutical supplier in its defence against an on-going investigation by the European Commission into patent settlement agreements.
- Representation of a major auto parts supplier in the context of the on-going investigation by competition authorities worldwide.
- Representation of a major pharmaceutical supplier in its successful defence against an investigation by the European Commission into alleged collusive behaviour and abuse of regulatory procedures.
- Advising numerous pharmaceutical and medical device companies on competition law issues arising in connection with the development and commercialization of their products, as well as collaborations, acquisitions, and licensing transactions.
- Representation of Ryanair in its appeal against the European Commission’s decision to block its proposed acquisition of Ireland’s national carrier, Aer Lingus.
- Representation of Microsoft in its dispute with the European Commission concerning their compliance with the Commission’s March 2004 Decision ordering Microsoft to make available interoperability information for its work group server operating systems.
- Advising clients in the apparel, automotive, construction, cosmetics, electronics, medical device, nutrition, pharmaceutical, and renewable energy sectors on various aspects of their European distribution networks.
- Assisting clients to receive clearance from various European competition authorities for mergers and acquisitions in the automotive, consumer diagnostics, electronics, entertainment, fashion, fragrance, oral care, and pharmaceutical sectors.
- Representation of one of the world’s leading oil companies in its appeal to the European Court of First Instance against a Commission decision imposing fines for participation in a cartel in the bitumen industry.
- Organizing and advising on competition law compliance programs for clients operating in various sectors.
