Mari K. Bonthuis is a senior litigation associate in the New York office whose practice focuses on complex insurance coverage matters.  She has litigated numerous cases on behalf of large commercial policyholders seeking insurance coverage under for a variety of claims, from historical environmental contamination to ongoing securities lawsuits.  Ms. Bonthuis has experience in all aspects of coverage litigation, from drafting pleadings to taking and defending depositions to briefing and arguing motions to trying cases.  Outside of the litigation context, she has advised policyholders on drafting policy language and worked with policyholders and their insurers to help maximize the insurance coverage available for ongoing claims.

  • Representing a Fortune 500 company in state court seeking coverage from dozens of insurers for the largest environmental dredging project in the United States.

  • Represented a major global financial institution seeking coverage for a securities lawsuit and investigation.
  • Represented through trial companies in claims of fraud and breach of fiduciary duty against former officers and directors.

  • Representing a Bureau of Prisons inmate in litigation alleging 8th Amendment violations.
  • Filed both state and federal habeas petitions on behalf of a New York state prisoner.
