Johnny Chiu is a partner in the firm’s Washington office.  He focuses his practice on litigation matters before the U.S. International Trade Commission, U.S. District Courts as well as state courts involving patent, trade secrets, and other intellectual property matters.  He also advises clients on compliance and negotiations strategies in the course of creation and operation of US subsidiaries or affiliates of foreign investors.

Raised in Taiwan, Mr. Chiu has taken advantage of his fluency in Taiwanese and Mandarin Chinese, as well as his legal training in both Taiwan and the United States, to build a vibrant practice, representing a number of Taiwan and China based technology companies.  Many of these companies are in the consumer electronics, computer and communication industries.  His experience as a U.S. Chief Legal Officer for a major international corporation provides him with the broad perspective needed to counsel clients on a strategic business level.  Prior to joining Covington & Burling, Mr. Chiu established and served as the Chief Representative and the Head of Office for the Shanghai, China Representative Office of a major international law firm.
