Covington represents a wide range of clients in power demand management matters.  We advise utilities, customers, power producers, wind and solar companies with respect to the smart grid, grid access, net metering, demand response, grid interconnection, and investment in transmission and distribution technologies and resources.  The firm’s data privacy practice also frequently provides counsel on privacy issues that arise from expanded deployment of “smart grid” technologies.

Covington’s attorneys are sought out and retained for their comprehensive and first-hand knowledge of the legal complexities involving the efficient distribution and allocation of power.  Our team includes a former Commissioner at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), a senior FERC electricity policy staff member, a former General Counsel of Constellation Energy, and a former Assistant General Counsel at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Our representative experience ranges from work with commercial companies to renewable energy companies and we have advised both government clients and publicly traded companies on operating in this highly regulated environment.  We have advised Wal-Mart on both smart grid and demand response issues and RES Americas on electric transmission matters in federal energy legislation and on a variety of FERC regulatory issues related to the expansion of the transmission grid.  In addition, multiple clients have come to us for advice on smart grid and demand response issues, including legislation and federal regulatory policies.  We also have advised clients in Europe, including UK government bodies, on the regulation of smart grid under European consumer protection and privacy laws. Covington demand management clients include Comverge, Inc., EnerNOC, Inc. and Viridity Energy.

Our attorneys are viewed as authorities on this new technology and are frequently invited to speak and write on the subject in order to shed light on facets of smart grid technology ranging from Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC) issues to corporate issues affecting consumers and corporations alike.
