Enrique Armijo is an associate in the firm’s Appellate, Communications and Media, and International practice groups.  He advises media clients in litigation, in transactional matters, and before the Federal Communications Commission.  He has also been involved in international investment disputes before the International Chamber of Commerce at the World Bank and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes.

Mr. Armijo represents broadcasters in administrative rulemaking proceedings and in transactions.  He also counsels clients on pre-broadcast and print review issues related to newsgathering, defamation, reporter subpoenas, and the First Amendment, and offers advice to television stations on their compliance with FCC and FEC rules on political advertising.

Mr. Armijo also practices in the area of international freedom of expression.  He currently serves on a team of media law scholars and practitioners from the Annenberg School of Communication’s Center for Global Communications Studies on an project advising the Kingdom of Jordan on its regulation of print and audiovisual communication.  He has also advised the governments of Rwanda, Bahrain, and Yemen on proposed amendments to their media and access to information laws, and has provided assessments of public broadcasting statutes for developing democracies in Asia and the Middle East.  Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Armijo was at the Programme for Comparative Media Law and Policy at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, working on international media law projects and conducting comparative research on media ownership regulation in the US and Europe.

Mr. Armijo also practices in the areas of international arbitration and international law, including investor-State and commercial arbitrations, Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act-related claims, and advising clients concerning the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other anti-corruption legislation.

Representative Matters

  • Representing a major oil company in an investment dispute with a South American country.
  • Representation of a foreign government in a US admiralty suit.
  • Representing major new entrant telecommunications company in the FCC’s 700 MHz spectrum auction proceeding.
  • Advise broadcast clients on a wide variety of media ownership and attribution issues.
  • Perform daily pre-broadcast review of news reports, editorials, and promotions for a group of 36 television stations. Regularly advise the stations’ reporters regarding newsgathering matters.
  • Help win regulatory approval for television station and other FCC-related transactions.
