Dan Robinson is an associate in the firm’s San Francisco office and practices patent litigation and general commercial litigation. He has represented clients in a variety of patent infringement matters in a number of jurisdictions, with a particular focus on patents covering computer software and electronics. Additionally, he has counseled clients on transactions involving patent licenses, and has defended clients in data privacy litigation. Mr. Robinson has an active pro bono practice, representing clients at trial in U.S. District Court and California Superior Court, and in briefings to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Representative Matters
- In re Certain Wireless Devices with 3G Capabilities, Inv. No. 337-TA-800 (ITC). Represented Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. in a proceeding brought by Inter Digital against Huawei, LG, Nokia and ZTE, seeking to preclude importation of cell phones, datapads, and other 3G devices into the US.
- Represented a leading smartphone maker in a patent infringement dispute in the Northern District of Illinois, that led to Judge Posner’s groundbreaking decision on patent damages.
- DownUnder Wireless LLC v. Samsung Elec. Co. et al. (E.D. Tex.). Represented Samsung in this patent litigation involving wireless communication devices. Obtained summary judgment dismissing all claims in favor of Samsung.
- Weyer et al. v. MySpace et al. (C.D. Cal.) and EveryMD v. Goldman Sachs et al. (C.D. Cal.) Represented MySpace, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan Chase in these patent litigations involving web pages.
- Finisar Corporation v. Source Photonics, Inc. et al., (N.D. Cal. 2010). Represented Source Photonics in this patent lawsuit involving fiber optic components used in telecommunication systems and data communication networks.
- Valentine et al. v. Nebuad, Inc. et al. (N.D. Cal.). Represented defendant Cable One against privacy-related claims in this class action. Prevailed on a motion to dismiss the claims against Cable One.
- Saxon Innovations Corp. v. Nokia, et al. (E.D. Tex.). Represented Samsung in this patent infringement case involving electronic circuitry. Successfully obtained dismissal of one asserted patent on summary judgment and the removal of another patent from contention during claim construction.
- O2 Micro v. Beyond Innovation (BiTEK), (E.D. Tex.). Represented BiTEK in this patent infringement case involving electronic circuitry.
Previous Experience
- Intuit, Inc., Software Engineering Manager for Quicken products (1999-2004). Among other areas, Mr. Robinson was responsible for online banking, data security, and customer privacy. Pro Bono
- Represented a prisoner in Federal Court in a civil rights case for the denial of medical care, culminating in a four-day jury trial with a successful settlement on the eve of closing arguments.
- Drafted briefs of Amicus Curiae on behalf of the Council for Parent and Attorney Advocates in support of plaintiffs in special education cases before the Ninth Circuit.
- Represented an indigent defendant in a misdemeanor proceeding in Marin County Superior Court, obtaining dismissal of all charges.
- Represented an indigent plaintiff in Federal Court in a civil rights case seeking damages for excessive force.
- Provided advice to nonprofits regarding compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and other statutes.
