DC Summer Associate Reception
The Washington Office Diversity Committee hosted its annual Summer Diversity Reception on June 13, 2012 at Rosa Mexicano. Over 80 people attended the event, including the Washington office’s 34 summer associates. Firm chairman Tim Hester gave remarks emphasizing the firm’s commitment to diversity and the importance of the summer program in our recruiting efforts. Attendees enjoyed the delicious food and drink at the popular Penn Quarter restaurant.

National LGBT Bar Association Honors Wells Fargo
On June 14, 2012, partner Bruce Deming hosted summer associates at the National LGBT Bar Association’s event honoring the in-house legal department of our client Wells Fargo.
2012 MALDEF Awards Gala
MALDEF held its 2012 Washington DC Awards Gala on June 20, 2012 at the Mayflower Hotel. Covington is an annual sponsor of this event and several attorneys from the firm attended. The gala paid tribute to the achievements of DC Court of Appeals Judge Vanessa Ruiz, Texas Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez, and Hispanic Link New Service Founder Charlie Eckstein.

ACLU LGBT AIDS Project Attorney Reception in New York
The New York office was proud to co-sponsor the American Civil Liberties Union’s LGBT & AIDS Project Attorney Reception held on June 20, 2012. Covington attorneys and summer associates attended the reception and enjoyed hearing the remarks of James Esseks, head of the LGBT & AIDS Project and a winner of the LeGaL Foundation’s Vision Award in March. Covington also co-sponsored the March LeGaL Foundation Annual Awards Dinner.
LGBT Pride Month Luncheon
In celebration of LGBT Pride Month, the Washington Diversity Committee organized a luncheon on June 20, 2012 to discuss Covington’s pro bono work relating to marriage equality issues. The well-attended luncheon featured a group of panelists who have worked on marriage-equality matters including Tom Williamson, chair of the employment practice group and current President of the DC Bar; Jean Veta, co-chair of the financial services industry group; Scott Freling from the government contracts group; and Matt Berns who practices in the litigation area. Covington is actively involved in marriage equality efforts in DC, Maryland, and California.

Women’s Forum Champagne and Strawberries Reception
On July 9, 2012, the Washington Women’s Forum hosted its summer Champagne and Strawberries Reception. The Women’s Forum is designed to create opportunities for interaction among women lawyers at all levels of the firm. Through regularly scheduled programs, the forum addresses issues of common interest such as career growth, mentoring, and business and professional development. It also provides networking events where women attorneys can spend time in a social setting getting to know each other more personally. This annual summer event includes women summer associates so that they can learn more about the Women's Forum and our individual women attorneys.

Museum of the American Indian Tour
The New York Diversity Committee sponsored a tour of the National Museum of the American Indian on July 12, 2012. A group of 15 Covington attorneys and summer associates received a guided tour of the museum’s temporary exhibition "Indivisible," which explores the history of people of blended African American and Native American heritage, and the permanent exhibit "Infinity of Nations," which honors the sovereignty of the individual Native American tribes. The tour focused on artifacts relating to tribal law and was followed by dinner at the BLT Bar & Grill located in the new W Hotel.
Hispanic Bar Association DC Reception
Covington partnered with the Hispanic Bar Association of DC to host a reception for Hispanic law students summering in DC. More than 60 attorneys and law students attended the July 17, 2012 reception, providing the students an opportunity to meet with practicing lawyers and learn more about their careers. Covington senior counsel and current DC Bar President Tom Williamson spoke to the law students on why they should start their careers in Washington, highlighting DC’s broad range of legal practice areas, close connection to the federal government, and abundance of non-profit organizations focused on the pursuit of justice.
