Benefits
The following is a general summary of certain benefits available from the firm, and is neither exhaustive nor definitive. All benefits are governed by written documents and, in some instances, by applicable law. For more specific details regarding the actual application of these benefits in particular circumstances, please contact us at the address listed below.
Bar Admission
Covington requires each of its lawyers in the San Diego office to be a member of the California Bar. We encourage associates who have not practiced before they come to the firm (e.g., those who come to the firm from law school or clerkship, or who have not practiced between law school and a clerkship) to take the appropriate bar examination before arrival. Those who do so are paid a stipend to help defray related expenses.
Associates who have practiced prior to joining the firm but who are not admitted to practice in California, will be reimbursed either their actual expenses for taking the applicable bar examination, including bar review course, examination fees and professional responsibility course.
Moving Expenses
The firm reimburses necessary and reasonable expenses incurred by a new associate to move to the San Diego area from his or her former US residence. In appropriate cases, the firm also reimburses additional moving-related expenses, such as those incurred in a house-hunting trip.
Annual/Sick Leave
All associates receive four weeks of paid annual leave, and we encourage the use of that leave. Sick leave is not subject to a specific limit.
Parental Leave
We provide 18 weeks of paid leave for primary caregivers upon the birth or adoption of a child and six weeks of paid leave for non-primary caregivers.
Unpaid Leave of Absence
Unpaid leaves of absence are available to care for children and other family members and may be granted in accordance with federal and state family leave laws.
Alternative Work Schedules
For many years, the firm has accommodated requests by both men and women who wish to work part-time to care for young children. We also consider alternative schedules for other purposes, such as teaching and writing. Part-time associates are eligible for and continue to progress toward partnership. Over three dozen lawyers currently work at the firm under part-time arrangements.
Insurance
Health: The Firm offers medical insurance coverage through a flexible plan design that provides the freedom to seek care within or outside the insurance network without a referral. Dental and vision insurance coverage are also available and can be elected separately. The firm pays a substantial portion of the cost of coverage for an associate and his or her eligible dependents, which may include their spouse or domestic partner of the same or opposite sex.
Disability: The firm provides associates with both short- and long-term disability benefits.
Emergency Travel Assistance: The firm provides Emergency Travel Assistance benefits to all associates and their dependents through Assist America, a global network of 600,000 pre-qualified medical/air and ground ambulance providers and operation centers.
Life Insurance: The firm provides associates with life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage. Associates may also purchase supplemental coverage for themselves and their dependents.
Retirement Savings Plan
The firm maintains a retirement savings, or 401(k), plan on behalf of its eligible associates. Each eligible associate may make pre-tax contributions and after-tax contributions to the plan. Associates are fully vested at all times in all contributions to the plan, including any earnings thereon. Associate accounts are invested as he/she directs, among a variety of investment options including equity, fixed-income, and money market investment funds.
Other Benefits
The firm offers flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care. These accounts allow associates to deduct money through payroll deductions on a pre-tax basis in order to pay for out of pocket health care and/or dependent care expenses.
