Work-Life Balance
More than ever before, lawyers are choosing their careers and their employers based not only on professional factors and career advancement potential, but also on the ability to achieve a comfortable balance between their work and personal interests.  The majority of our partners – including our part-time partners – are parents who have combined successful careers with fulfilling family lives.

We know that meeting the needs of our attorneys and staff as well as those of their families is essential to attract and retain top professionals.  To this end, among other things, the firm offers:

Alternative Work Schedules.  We have long had a part-time policy under which any lawyer can work part-time.  Currently, 50 of our lawyers are working on part-time schedules.  A number of attorneys, including five women lawyers, have become partners while working part-time.

Childcare.  We opened a full-service daycare and early learning center in 2005.  Covington Kids Early Learning Center, located in Washington, has the capacity to care for nearly 100 children from infancy to age five.

Emergency Care.  We also offer emergency back-up care to all lawyers in the New York, San Francisco, and Washington offices providing for in-home or center-based emergency back-up care for adults as well as children.

Birth/Adoption Leave.  We provide primary caregivers with 18 weeks paid leave upon the birth or adoption of a child.  Non-primary caregivers receive six weeks of paid leave within four months of the birth or adoption of a child.

Domestic Partners.  We have provided domestic partner health insurance benefits since 1994.

Work-Life Balance Group.  We have a work-life balance group, comprised of both men and women, that is open to all interested attorneys who want to discuss issues relating to balancing work and other obligations.  The group has periodic informal lunches and has sponsored programs on topics such as estate planning and childcare options.  There is also an email group that enables interested attorneys to exchange information about work-life related issues.
