Pro Bono
We believe that lawyers have an obligation to provide high quality legal services to those who do not have access to them.  As a result, Covington’s lawyers and trainees are encouraged to devote significant time to pro bono work.  We believe that our commitment to pro bono work and other public service activities not only provides a beneficial service but also helps in training and developing our lawyers.  Many of our young lawyers working on pro bono matters may take on tasks that otherwise might not have been available to them for several years.  If you are interested, you will have the opportunity to participate in the firm’s pro bono work.

The London office is a member of ProHelp, works with local and international public service and non-profit organisations, and participates with our other offices on a wide array of pro bono assignments.  For example, recently we have advised local community groups on employment matters, worked with the International Paralympics Committee on dispute resolution and other assignments and conducted a multi-jurisdiction review of prison conditions and poverty as they impact women on behalf of a Sierra Leone-based group.  Covington’s London office has been short-listed for several awards for our pro bono efforts.

Covington’s tradition of public service started in its US offices.  Those offices continue to do extensive pro bono work, including representing indigent criminal defendants through The Bronx Defenders (New York office), representing indigent clients in partnership with the Marin County Public Defender’s Office (San Francisco office), and working in local community legal services organisations such as Bread for the City (Washington office).

The firm’s abiding commitment to pro bono work has consistently ranked us among the leaders in the US and has earned us many awards over the years from individual clients, legal services organisations, and the legal profession.  In its 2007 annual pro bono survey, The American Lawyer ranked Covington first among US law firms.

Our pro bono work immerses our lawyers in many controversial, interesting, and important public policy issues, and it reflects the fact that we are a firm of diverse viewpoints.  We believe that all views, even of the most controversial issues, are entitled to high quality legal representation.
