Diversity
At Covington, we recognise the differences amongst us as an asset and a source of strength. We believe that excellence in the practice of law knows no racial, ethnic, gender, religious, sexual orientation, or other boundaries. Covington lawyers and trainees bring a wide variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences to our practice. By recruiting, retaining, developing, and promoting a diverse group of lawyers, we advance the interests of our clients, our practice, and our entire profession.
Over 35 percent of the partners in our London office are women. Nearly one-half of our lawyers and trainees in London are women or ethnic minorities.
Covington’s first women and minority partners were elected more than 30 years ago. Women, African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American and openly gay lawyers hold senior positions throughout the firm, including on the Management Committee and in practice group leadership. Today the firm has 35 women partners, 5 African-American partners, 4 openly gay partners and 2 Hispanic partners. In all, over 80 of our lawyers are African-American, Asian, and Hispanic or openly gay. Just as important, over 90% of our women and minority partners joined Covington as summer associates in the US or as associates and were promoted from within our ranks.
Covington’s Diversity Committee works diligently to frame and support our workplace diversity efforts, including: working with firm leadership to recruit and retain lawyers of diverse experiences and backgrounds; promoting an open dialogue at the firm on issues of diversity; and fostering an environment in which diversity can flourish.
