Frequently Asked Questions
Q:  What does Covington & Burling LLP look for in its trainees?

A:  Grant Castle, Training Principal of the London Office of Covington & Burling LLP believes “all lawyers need to be intellectually curious and passionate about the practice of law. To be successful at anything, particularly something that requires as much effort as a legal career, you really do need to have a passion for it. There are also a number of qualities that are very important to us. Firstly, the ability to get along with others is needed for effective team-working. Secondly, creative thinking and excellent legal skills are needed to provide innovative solutions to clients’ problems.”

Q:  Why choose a US firm and not a magic circle firm?

A:  The London office of a US law firm can offer the prestige and quality of work of an large international firm, yet the intimacy and responsibility that comes with working within a small office.

Q:  Does Covington & Burling LLP give any financial assistance to prospective trainees whilst studying for the GDL and LPC?

A:  We pay fees for the GDL and LPC. In addition we pay an annual maintenance grant of £8,000.

Q:  Does Covington & Burling LLP have an intake of trainees in March?

A:  Some firms take trainees in two intakes per year.  However due to the size of Covington & Burling’s scheme we feel it will be more beneficial to the trainees for all of them to join at the same time.  We therefore have one intake in September.

Q:  What training will be provided during the training contract?

A:  We will be providing both in-house and external training courses.

Q:  Does training at a US firm put you at a disadvantage with UK firms for the future?

A:  No.  A full training programme will be given in accordance with Law Society guidelines.

Q:  Does Covington & Burling LLP have a preference as to where the GDL or LPC should be studied?

A:  No.  We do, however, require students to choose options during their courses that will be relevant to their training contract.
