Trainee Profile - Rajvinder Jagdev
My first seat was in the firm's Dispute Resolution group.  During my time in the department I worked on several large matters, some which received significant media attention, and others which, thanks to our intervention, were safely kept out of the media spotlight!  I was involved in drafting submissions, engaging in legal research, and liaising with co-counsel and clients.

Far from the usual litigation trainee tasks of photocopying and bundling, one of my very first assignments was to make an ex parte application before a Queens Bench Division practice master for an order compelling a witness to give evidence in a deposition.  I was also given my own client matter to manage - I supervised the implementation of an occupational health claims handling process in the in-house legal department of a major defence contractor.

I was also involved in an internal investigation for a multinational energy company, which involved reviewing and auditing a series of transactions and employee correspondence.

The firm has a long-standing commitment to pro bono work and this was exemplified in my first seat.  I had the opportunity to work on a long-standing pro bono matter, involving an application to a government agency for access to records under the Freedom of Information Act on behalf of a Washington DC based news agency.

My current seat is in the IP/IT practice group.  The firm has a formidable array of technology clients, and has a renowned data privacy practice.  I have assisted in drafting advice for major pharmaceutical and technology companies with regard to their data privacy policies.  The firm is well known for its lobbying expertise, and this is particularly evident in the London IP/IT group. We regularly lobby national and EU government agencies on existing and proposed legislation that would affect our clients.  I have drafted several position papers on various EU directives, particularly in the Internet and telecommunications regulatory area.

My work in IP/IT also has a strong international element.  Although we are based in London, this office provides advice on data protection issues in all non-US jurisdictions, from Burkina Faso to New Zealand.  I have also assisted, and in a few cases supervised, multinational notification and research projects.  As a result of one of the projects I participated in, we now have a comprehensive database of data breach notification laws from around the world - probably the world’s first.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the first year at the firm.  I have consistently been given varied, challenging, and certainly interesting work.  The working environment in the office is collegial yet professional, which I find to be a perfect mix.  In my remaining two seats, I am looking forward to developing new skills, and experiencing the world of corporate law.
