Alex Melia is an associate in the dispute resolution group of the London office.  She joined Covington as a trainee solicitor in September 2006.

Ms. Melia’s practice encompasses a wide range of contentious and quasi-contentious matters, including litigation before the English courts, arbitral proceedings and internal corporate investigations.  She also advises clients on the design, implementation and evaluation of global compliance programmes.  She has gained particular experience advising UK and international clients in the energy and life sciences sectors.

Representative Matters

Litigation & Arbitration

  • Representing a pharmaceutical company in several arbitrations under ICC rules arising from disputes with its distributors.
  • Representing an animal health company in its defence of substantial claims arising out of the 2007 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom.
  • Representing a financial services company in High Court litigation arising from a dispute with several of its contractors.
  • Representing a leading European fashion design company in High Court litigation arising from a dispute with a key customer.
  • Representing a humanitarian aid organisation in connection with an application to the European Court of Human Rights alleging breaches of Article 6 of the Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and Article 1 of Protocol 1 to the Convention.

Pro Bono

  • Representing the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee in connection with litigation in Bulgaria to recover Jewish property seized during World War II.
  • Advising an international charitable organisation that provides micro financing to the world’s lowest-income entrepreneurs on its incorporation as a company and registration as a charity in England and Wales.
  • Providing corporate support to Evidence for Development, a charitable organisation that develops economic models and analytical tools to assess international development interventions.
  • Advising a charitable organisation on the potential product liability issues arising from the supply of anti-retroviral drugs to patients in various parts of the Developing World.
