Alexander Berengaut is an associate in the firm’s litigation and international groups. His practice focuses on international arbitration, complex commercial litigation, and white collar criminal defense. Mr. Berengaut also regularly advises corporate clients on national security and law enforcement-related compliance issues, including matters involving electronic surveillance, data privacy, and cross-border transactions.

Representative Matters

  • Representation of the National Football League in connection with antitrust litigation arising out of the 2011 lockout. See Brady v. NFL, 644 F.3d 661 (8th Cir. 2011).
  • Representation of shareholders in the Yukos Oil Company in an arbitration against the Russian Federation. See Renta 4, et al. v. The Russian Federation (Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce).
  • Counsel to a leading technology company in connection with a commercial dispute and related national security compliance matters.
  • Defense of a Fortune 100 corporate executive in a Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigation by the Department of Justice and SEC.
  • Representation of leading electronic communication service providers in connection with surveillance requests from US and foreign law enforcement agencies.

Pro Bono

  • Co-trial representation of a criminal defendant in a four-day jury trial involving charges of attempted murder, first degree assault, and related weapons offenses.  Defendant was acquitted of attempted murder, and seven of eight convictions on the remaining counts were reversed on appeal.
  • Trial representation of a criminal defendant in successive jury trials against an allegation of second degree assault, resulting first in a mistrial and ultimately in an acquittal.
